My writing journey began in my freshman year of high school when I was assigned to write haiku in English class. I soon fell in love with words and delved into writing both short stories and poetry. By my senior year I was named editor of our school’s literary magazine.
Although I began college as an English Literature major, my life took a circuitous path. Shortly after getting married, I relocated from central New Jersey to the Finger Lakes area of New York State where I attended Cornell University and switched my major to Horticulture (a long story). When we moved to East Lansing, I completed a Masters in Horticulture at Michigan State. But my love of writing was a thread that wove its way through my various pursuits. I wrote extension bulletins, edited a horticulture newsletter, and authored a garden column. Once we arrived in California, I worked in the floral industry where I edited and wrote research articles for various journals as well as feature articles on gardening.
After my daughters were in high school, I taught middle school science for twenty years, but also taught an elective on creative writing and edited the school’s literary magazine. I wrote personal and travel journals, tributes, and short stories.
It wasn’t until I retired that I returned to my first love, poetry. It has been a passion for the last few years, as well as writing short memoir stories.
I am thrilled that my first chapbook, Aperture, has been accepted for publication in January 2023.
